Default Can't Connect

I've looked all over these forums and done everything it has said, and everytime I try to open the Auto Updater, it says can't connect, please check your proxy settings and try again. I have tried re-downloading it 100 times, disabled all firewalls, reset my router, I added that line to the hosts file, nothing works. I reformated my computer about 2 weeks ago, and I used ProfitUI before then, and everything worked fine, but since I reformatted it will not work, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I get the same message.
"Cannot connect!
Please check your network settings or try again later.
Do you want to change proxy settings?"

Java is updated and if I put the path "http://updater.pala.de:443" in a browser I get an OK message.
I turned of my windows firewall, but no luck there.

I've tried this on 2 computers (one with WinXP Pro 32 bit and the other is WinXP Pro 64 bit). I get the same result on both computers.

Any ideas?

You could maybe try looking at the optional updates from Windows update, and see if there's anything to do with updates with anything pertaining to internet explorer, or communicating with the internet.

Also try the hosts file configuration as described in the FAQ.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.

I tried that out but with no luck.

Strange thing is I can ping both the IP and the dns name.
You don't happen to have the source code for the updater somewhere on your website do you?
I could try to step through it and see if I find whats wrong.

The issue is that Java can't resolve DNS on some systems. I don't have the source code at hand right now but it's just a .jar, there are many free decompilers that can reconstruct the sources from it.

Since the updatear is released under lgpl due to the addon classes I used, the source code is pretty much open source. Just write me a pm and I'll send it to you (after the weekend since I am not at home atm writing on a mobile phone ) Decompiling applications is never a good thing to do in terms of legality. I don't think you will find anything useful though, I use Javas very standard functions to open streams to the web server. If they go fubar, there's no point of trying something else (and its really just affecting a few people)...

Me and Kaldran have found the problem. Or at least one bug that could solve this.
It's caused by an sql driver that does not handle special characters as unicode characters.
Kaldran is working on a fix to that.

In my case I had an Icelandic letter in the path to the database, which ProfitUI Updater uses, located in my user profile. That is what was causing this error on my computer.

I changed it to use another type of DB now, seems to work fine. Since I'll have to do another few tests and due to my limited time I'll release it around sunday night....

Pushed the update to the updater live now. Please check all your settings, since they get deleted by the update.

This will fix the "can't connect" error when using a windows user name with special chars. There are a few other 'bugs' causing the updater to not connect to its server. These are DNS related usually, so restarting your router or flushing your dns cache are still valid options to try...

Very nice.

I'll check it out when I get home tonight.
Btw. I should be able to download the updater again to get this fix? right?

(just asking because I can't use the old updater to get the new one, it won't run the update process)

Lazy... I had to work yesterday and when I finally got home I had no motivation to check whether you had finally fixed that updater code.

Server is fine, so it's on your end (firewall, router, etc., maybe you need to use the hosts file workaround as explained in the FAQ).

I am still having problems getting the server to connect. You guys have always been good so Im sure we can figure it out.,, I dont have alot of knowledge in this stuff but I did follow the instructions.

I did the host walkaround using the wordpad and verified the host address was in the host file

I checked the firewall and even added it to allow access

I deleted all profit files and even uninstalled the whole eq2 folder and reinstalled it from scratch..

I have the latest java from the link on your website and I copied the address and I get the "It works" display

I have the latest .net downloaded from mircrosoft

I downloaded your downloader and placed it in its zipped form in my eq2 folder and unzipped it..When I did that it gave me a icon for ui updater and manual install. I hit the updater icon and it gave me the default location..c: programs folder/profitupdater and I hit next. it places a bunch of folders and gives me your desktop square icon. I try to connect and it gives me the cannot connect do you want to change your proxy settings.

Is this correct or did I do something wrong? and what else can I try?

Does the error pop up right after you start the updater or does it take around 10 seconds or so for it to show up?
