Default Permission

I keep getting told that my permission has been denied and that I need to run the updater on with admin rights. I am the admin. Not sure if it's a windows 7 issue or not. Love the program though when it works.

Usually with most programs that means you need to right click and choose run as administrator.

That's one thing that's got me hesitant to move up to Windows 7: the whole "don't run as administrator by default" thing is supposed to improve security, but all it's done in practice is require us to run everything as Administrator. Well, that and forced us techies to try explaining the intricacies of administrator and UAC and such to non-techies.

If you're using Vista... just move to 7, it's what vista should have been. If you're using XP... the administrator permissions thing isn't that bad. It gives the end user more control, and isn't an issue for most things. With updaters for EQ2 it's only an issue because it's a program trying to modify files for another program, which is an action that should normally be prevented and require user authorization.

Not really, all the updaters only update the files that were downloaded through them in the first place.

Microsoft has been trying to force programmers for a long time to separate static files (i.e. executables) and dynamic files (i.e. settings, caches, etc.) into different locations (Program Files directory vs Documents and Settings/User Files). The problem is that this is not happening (EQ2MAP updater stores cache in its own folder, EQ2 UI must be in EQ2 folder, etc.). UAC would work if Microsoft's programming guidelines were kept by all applications but since are not it is somewhat of a failed concept with people just clicking ok by default or running everything as admin.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.

The updater only asks for permission if it notices that it is not allowed to modify the eq2 files. So do not install Everquest to \program files and it will not bother you :P
