Unable to link items in chat window

I know there are several other threads about this problem, but I am still unable to get this to work.

When i shift click on an item picture in an examine window the cursor appears in my chat window but the link does not.

I have tried clicking on always chat here. Have closed and reopened chat windows. No luck.

With a recent update, you are now only able to chat in the main window.

Please help, I need to link items all the time for crafting purposes.
