Can't Connect
I've looked all over these forums and done everything it has said, and everytime I try to open the Auto Updater, it says can't connect, please check your proxy settings and try again. I have tried re-downloading it 100 times, disabled all firewalls, reset my router, I added that line to the hosts file, nothing works. I reformated my computer about 2 weeks ago, and I used ProfitUI before then, and everything worked fine, but since I reformatted it will not work, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I get the same message.
"Cannot connect! Please check your network settings or try again later. Do you want to change proxy settings?" Java is updated and if I put the path "http://updater.pala.de:443" in a browser I get an OK message. I turned of my windows firewall, but no luck there. I've tried this on 2 computers (one with WinXP Pro 32 bit and the other is WinXP Pro 64 bit). I get the same result on both computers. Any ideas? |

You could maybe try looking at the optional updates from Windows update, and see if there's anything to do with updates with anything pertaining to internet explorer, or communicating with the internet.
|
Also try the hosts file configuration as described in the FAQ.

Strange thing is I can ping both the IP and the dns name. You don't happen to have the source code for the updater somewhere on your website do you? I could try to step through it and see if I find whats wrong. |
The issue is that Java can't resolve DNS on some systems. I don't have the source code at hand right now but it's just a .jar, there are many free decompilers that can reconstruct the sources from it.
|
Ok, thanks for your help thou.
|
Since the updatear is released under lgpl due to the addon classes I used, the source code is pretty much open source. Just write me a pm and I'll send it to you (after the weekend since I am not at home atm writing on a mobile phone :p) Decompiling applications is never a good thing to do in terms of legality. I don't think you will find anything useful though, I use Javas very standard functions to open streams to the web server. If they go fubar, there's no point of trying something else (and its really just affecting a few people)...
|
A flush of the DNS fixed it for me.
|
DNS Flush did not do it for me.
Thanks Kaldran I'll send you an email. Maybe (probably) I wont find anything ... but doesnt hurt to try. |
Me and Kaldran have found the problem. Or at least one bug that could solve this.
It's caused by an sql driver that does not handle special characters as unicode characters. Kaldran is working on a fix to that. In my case I had an Icelandic letter in the path to the database, which ProfitUI Updater uses, located in my user profile. That is what was causing this error on my computer. |
Oh nice, thanks you two for sticking with it and finding the bug. :)
|
I changed it to use another type of DB now, seems to work fine. Since I'll have to do another few tests and due to my limited time I'll release it around sunday night....
|
Pushed the update to the updater live now. Please check all your settings, since they get deleted by the update.
This will fix the "can't connect" error when using a windows user name with special chars. There are a few other 'bugs' causing the updater to not connect to its server. These are DNS related usually, so restarting your router or flushing your dns cache are still valid options to try... |
Very nice.
I'll check it out when I get home tonight. Btw. I should be able to download the updater again to get this fix? right? (just asking because I can't use the old updater to get the new one, it won't run the update process) |
You can download it once lazy gm9 updates the download section :P Fixed version is 1.12
|
Lazy... I had to work yesterday and when I finally got home I had no motivation to check whether you had finally fixed that updater code. :p
|
Lazy me updated the download section. Grab it while it's hot. :p

cant connect to server
I downloaded the updater on 3/11/08 at 1020am EST and I get the can not connect to server , change proxy settings. IS your server down or am I doing something wrong?
|
Server is fine, so it's on your end (firewall, router, etc., maybe you need to use the hosts file workaround as explained in the FAQ).
|
Hi there.
I just wanted to say that after a litle slacking I downloaded version 1.12 and it works fine now for me. Thanks for the fix :) |
I am still having problems getting the server to connect. You guys have always been good so Im sure we can figure it out.,, I dont have alot of knowledge in this stuff but I did follow the instructions.
I did the host walkaround using the wordpad and verified the host address was in the host file I checked the firewall and even added it to allow access I deleted all profit files and even uninstalled the whole eq2 folder and reinstalled it from scratch.. I have the latest java from the link on your website and I copied the address and I get the "It works" display I have the latest .net downloaded from mircrosoft I downloaded your downloader and placed it in its zipped form in my eq2 folder and unzipped it..When I did that it gave me a icon for ui updater and manual install. I hit the updater icon and it gave me the default location..c: programs folder/profitupdater and I hit next. it places a bunch of folders and gives me your desktop square icon. I try to connect and it gives me the cannot connect do you want to change your proxy settings. Is this correct or did I do something wrong? and what else can I try? |
Does the error pop up right after you start the updater or does it take around 10 seconds or so for it to show up?
|
after I first install it it takes a few seconds but once I get the error its just about automatic
|
Try deleting the files in %Appdata%\ProfitUI Reborn Downloader and start it again.
|
where is that?
|
just type '%Appdata%\ProfitUI Reborn Downloader' into the box at Start->Run .. should open your file explorer...
|
holly crap you are the best..once I deleted those 5 files it worked..
Thank you sooo much Kaldran..I love this UI and did not want to leave it |
Guess I have to implement some more checks for database consistency *sigh* Though I have no idea how they got broken....
|
Tried to break it, actually it does a very good job on resolving inconsistency issues. Only thing that could happen is two instances of the updater running the same time (e.g. when one doesn't close properly). This keeps the database locked for the other instance. The sql driver of the valid instance will then check if the database was untouched for 10 seconds and restore its contents to the last checkpoint (around every 20 seconds changed data gets commited to the disk). If for any reason the crashed instance is still updating the lock status, the database will not be restored. To solve this issue just restart the computer. I didn't manage to break it so bad it wasn't able to restore.
Will implement some better warning messages for different errors and an option to get the database to factory settings... |
Try deleting the files in %Appdata%\ProfitUI Reborn Downloader and start it again.
This worked tried everything I read in the Forums. But This is what fixed it Thank you. Thank You. Thank You. I was about to reinstall Windows xp all over again. |
