Player icons aside (please read the sticky in the EQ2MAP section about them), POI icons are perfectly moddable. In fact, I know several UI set authors already mod them. For example, the icons included in FetishNightfall are slightly different from the default EQ2MAP. And if you wanted to, you could always mod it so that original EQ2MAP map-1 style icons were used (ie the little colored dots).
