Is what's on your desktop (or wherever what you're clicking to start the updater is) a shortcut or do you have the actual .JNLP file there? You want the shortcut and to follow the steps mentioned in previous posts. You shouldn't have any problems running it with Vista 64-bit. I'm running just fine with Windows 7 64-bit.
If you're trying to run the updater by clicking the actual .JNLP file, you're going to need to uninstall the updater and delete that .JNLP file and then go to
http://updater.pala.de/ to reinstall it.
That should get you going.
