When we determine that someone has hacked around with their appearance file, we set them to a troll to correct the problem. So most likely you just did something invalid.

Now to address the issue of modifying CCF files in general...

I'm no SOE lawyer, but I would expect the EULA prohibits doing this since those files are part of the game and you are making modifications to them outside of the game. Obviously nothing is going to happen if you're playing around with the locally, but I expect if you made something that was obviously hacked and used it on a live server you'd risk someone petitioning your character. Again, I'm not sure what Customer Service policy is on this, so I don't know what action they would take if they verified someone hacked their CCF file. I don't even want to speculate because I don't want to be responsible for someone doing something and then getting quoted in a petition. "But Rothgar said on EQIIInterface that..."

There are some logical behind-the-scenes reasons why certain characteristics are not validated on the server, but this is something we are aware of and will most likely look into fixing soon. This has become more popular lately and is now drawing more attention.

Hate to be a stick in the mud but my opinion would be to not do this on a live server. Even if you know someone who has done this and nothing happened to his character, I wouldn't use that as precedent for your own actions.
