There is also an easier solution now, all skinpacks are now accessible via the variants menu of the updater. Make sure to remove any ignores on the .dds files that you may have previously configured for this to work correctly.

If it does not work, you likely installed it incorrectly. Always try a clean install before reporting bugs.
