1. Yes. That is correct. You can name the keymap ini files anything you like. I have 3 people that use my computer for EQ2 and each of us like our own keymap settings. Therefore, we each have an ini file named after our initials (such as mns.ini). That way whenever one of us logs in all we need to do is open up the Options menu and select the appropriate file from the Keyboard Layouts drop down menu. After that we are up and running without issue.
2. I really can't answer that, as you have already guessed. However, what I can tell you is that the linked workaround was for a bug that SOE introduced when they first released the load / save commands back in May 2006. I've always found it strange that they would be aware of a bug from nearly day one of it's existence and know a workaround but haven't bothered to tackle the problem head on yet. Over a year for a bug under those circumstances seems like a rather long time to me.
Having said that, the workaround has worked successfully for me since the beginning of the issue so I don't have much to complain about. Besides that, they have done an excellent job on upgrading and maintaining the game otherwise. Needless to say, despite little things like this I'm extremely happy with how SOE has handled EQ2 and this community alone makes it all worth while.
Best of luck and please post back if there's anything else that we might be able to help with.
