You can turn off the POI's by clicking on the plus object in the upper left hand corner of the map. You how ever can not set it to default to off.
There is a type of search in the works, but with the release of EoF and what not that project has pretty much came to a stand still. Once mods are fixed and every thing has settled down I'm sure it'll get going again.
