I can honestly say that a DDS image file could in no way shift/break your problem with the character select screen. Thats like saying adding a new wallpaper to your desktop causes the screen resolution to change.
First of all, you want to make sure you start out with a clean Fetish directory. It isn't advised to simply extract over the top of your old files, but to start with a clean slate. to me, it sounds like the root size is smaller than the charscene size, which results in clipping. I would *suggest* that you make sure that the any sub's are the same size or smaller than the root itself.
