MP3 Player...EQ had one, is it possible in EQ2?
EQ1 had an MP3 player in it, not sure if it was official or not but my UI for it, called Quartz, has it built in. Is this possible to do in EQ2? It would be awesome if somebody could make one, as I'm horridly inept at this UI making deal (beyond figuring out how to install one, that is, hehe).
If it's not possible I'll start a thread on the EQ2 official forums asking a dev to consider the idea, and it would be nice if anybody interested would post there to show your support. Just need to know if it's possible yet before I decide to make that post. Thanks for the help! EDIT: I found out that it is not possible for modders to add one, so I'll contact SOE and give them the idea. |
First, you really need to search for threads that address your request! Such as:
http://www.eq2interface.com/forums/s...ght=mp3+player Second, No need for one, since EQ2 runs well windowed. You can use MSoft's media player or any other mp3 player easily outside of eq2. Just window mode if your keyboard does not have mp3 controls built in. Mine does, so I que up my playlist outside of eq2. Run the mp3 player and then launch the game. My keyboard allows me to skip, repeat, or anything i need to do while listening to the music. (Just remember to "mute" EQ2 sounds in game via the sound settings.) |
I found the info right afterwards and edited my request to say so. Also, not everybody likes windowed mode, I personally hate it because it's got all sorts of distracting extras showing from Windows. I'm on a laptop that's got decently fast RAM but the speed is really hard to upgrade, so it takes a while to Alt+enter, and not everybody's comp can do it as fast as mine. And not everybody's comp has the RAM to support both the game and an MP3 player, particularly if they're using bloatware like Windows Media Player.
Seems like everybody is plain HOSTILE to this idea in the threads I'm seeing. I really have to wonder why, it's just a nice feature they could add in to help people enjoy the game more. Yeah, you can play EQ2 windowed but that doesn't mean people like to, and it would make listening to custom music a lot easier. That said, thanks for the help. |
Wether you play MP3s in windows, or the DEVs add an MP3 player, you will still be using the same system resources.
It's not something that I can see them adding to EQ2. From what I hear, most seem to use windowed anyway (although have no real proof or facts) I was always a full screen player, but in the last year, I have switced to windowed mode and never looked back. I remember the days when I wanted an ingame browser and in game MP3 player...and ingame MSN..... I remeber coming to this website a couple of years ago looking for an MP3 player actually. Never understood why it wasn't possible....until recent. I suppose that you could make a UImod that had play, pause, next..etc buttons on it....When pressed did an emote... Then you could get a log parser to read your log and act according to the emote and control your favorite windows MP3 player Add a directX overlay to display artist and title.... It's a project. :) There was this program....ages ago that pretended to run EQ2 in full screen, but infact it ran it in windowed mode covering up the taskbar. It then overlaid things on top of the game....one of these things was an MP3 player. It looked like it was full screen and ran like it was full screen...only problem was I think the program had too many other things. I have forgotten the name. Wow...I babbled on a bit |
Maybe I should search before posting too :)
This is about using combat stats as a log parser and ingame buttons to play music whilst full screen. http://www.eq2interface.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=2402 |

Would you rather SOE work on the game or work on an MP3 player? If you want to play full screen and don't have music controls on your keyboard you can use the global key commands in Winamp or something similar. It takes about 10 MB of memory. |
Hehe, you misunderstand me. I personally could play with an MP3 player up at the same time but it seems EQ1's player consumes less resources than your average bloatware MP3 player today. I use foobar, which is really light, so I don't really have that problem. But I'm sure other people do. I was just interested in the concept as it would be a nice addon.
Honestly a lot of what SOE does to the game and such is functionality updates, such as adding a browser, streamlining functionality, etc. I see no reason adding an MP3 player shouldn't be classified as working on the game since things like the browser are casually added to updates as well. As far as Windowed mode I can't be sure. I haven't seen many people play EQ2 IRL so I don't know which is more prominent, windowed or not. But if windowed is more prominent then why did they add a browser instead of making us use our default browser? Obviously they think something for adding that sort of functionality (although honestly the browser in game takes longer to load than my firefox does so it's not a huge upgrade, but I'm sure a light MP3 player would be a lot less strenuous on resources than iTunes, WMP, Winamp, and whatever else most people use that has a lot of stuff that wouldn't be needed in game) |
I play in full screen and don't run any other programs or mp3 players.
If foobar works for you in full screen mode I'm not sure why you're asking for a solution to a problem that you don't have. The browser was added because the Gecko browser was added to the petition window so players could petition within the game. I only have 1GB of memory and the game doesn't run well at all with Firefox running at the same time so I'm glad they added the in-game browser. I'm sure they've considered adding an mp3 player but they must have decided it wasn't worth the time and effort. |
I wish they would add one. Yea I can control mine now through key presses. It would be nice to have an ingame music (I say music because limiting it to MP3 would blow) player with HUD. To be able to see my playlist and have pnp control over it while in game would be cool.

Just use WinAmp (or any other MP3 player that lets you program keys to control the functions), start up your play list, then start up EQ2 and go. Use CTRL-<whatever> or whatever other keys you wish to use for WinAmp to change songs, pause, etc.

You sure you dont have any special media control buttons on your laptop? Most have simple Play/Pause/Forward/Back buttons that work with almost any media player application.
