Solution:
The updater cant connect to the internet, you must allow the updater to connect to the internet. The most common problem is a firewall that is not set up properly.

Also getting this message, and the funny thing is that the it pops up even without a firewall running. Any hints?

Do you have Windows Firewall running in the background and not even aware of it?

Shouldn't matter, the Windows Firewall doesn't block outbound connections.
