need administrative privileges
I just tried installing ProfitUI reborn. I downloaded to winzip and tried to extract to the UI subfolder I created (as per the installation faq's) but installation failed. I got the message that I need administrative privileges to do this. How do I set my administrative privileges for downloading and installing the UI? Note that I have to run EQ2 as administrator, too (to start the game, I right click on the EQ2 icon and choose "run as administrator") in order to play. I have Windows Vista.
Thanks in advance for all your help! |
The same way you run EQ2... right click and hit run as an administrator.

The easiest way would be to extract the files to a non-protected folder like c:\temp and then move them to the EQ2 UI folder. This will make Windows automatically ask you for permission.

I had the same issue. Because its a java applet you cant run it as an administrator by clicking on it. You will have to go into your user accounts and turn OFF user account control. Once you've finished installing you can turn in back on. Hope that helps!

I think this thread is not about the updater. You can however run it as administrator by right clicking the shortcuts on your desktop or in your start menu.

Dominoe, how do I turn off the user account control?

Just as a friendly warning... if you don't know what UAC is or how to turn it off yourself and what the implications are... you probably shouldn't turn it off. It's supposedly there for your protection.
Not that I've ever tried running a Java applet in Vista/Win7, but can't you make a windows shortcut for javaw.exe to run with admin privileges and have that shortcut point to the applet using the -jar command-line switch in the target? IE a shortcut with: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "C:\PathToApplet\applet.jar" Then you right click that shortcut and run as admin, etc. Assuming we're dealing with a JAR file... I've never used what's being talked about so I can only guess. |
In Vista I know you can just right click the shortcut you get when you install Profit and run as Admin. Also you can set the default action in the shortcut properties and clicking advanced under the shortcut tab, and then going to the compatibility tab.

But yes, don't disable UAC as it is possible to launch it with elevated rights. Also in Win7 you should put UAC security to very high instead of the default high, as this won't provide any protection. |
